Using examples, we then discuss single and multi-herbal Ayurvedic formulations. We also examine and compare the traditional and modern methods of quality control for Ayurvedic formulations. Therefore, the first section of this chapter explains the principles and traditional methods for preparing the different types of basic Ayurvedic formulations. As the advantages and disadvantages of purifying medicinal compounds from source herbs are becoming clear, we require a greater understanding of the biochemical and pharmacological bases underlying the preparation of traditional Ayurvedic drugs as crude extracts. Indeed, the concept of preparing standardized crude extracts of herbal drugs is gaining acceptance at the scientific and commercial level. However, empirical studies perfected over thousands of years have established stringent protocols for preparation of Ayurvedic drugs as crude extracts with minimal adverse effects. For the past two decades, studies have focused on pure compounds isolated from the medicinal plants listed in Ayurvedic texts. The search for new drugs has led to renewed study of Ayurvedic drugs and their mechanisms of action.
